Online betting in Kenya, one section at a time
A small reference book for the person placing the bet. Six chapters cover opening an account, the Act itself, stakes and taxes, deposits and withdrawals, limits and self-exclusion, and the words on your bet slip. Every rule names the section of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 or the 2026 Regulation it comes from, so you can check it yourself.
Find your chapter by its tab
The coloured tabs on the edge of every page are the handbook's index. Each colour is one chapter, and the colour follows the chapter wherever it appears: on the cover of each guide, in the table of contents and in the rule finder. On a phone the tabs hang from the top of the page; on a wider screen they sit on the right edge of the page and stay in view while you read.
How to use this handbook
Start from your question, not from the law
Type a word into the rule finder, such as deposit, age or payout. Each row gives a one-sentence answer and names the section or regulation it comes from.
Read the guide behind the rule
Every chapter has guides that walk through one rule at a time in plain English, with the key facts in a table and the primary sources listed at the end, each with the date it was read.
Check the section yourself
The locators point at the Gambling Control Act, 2025 and the Legal Notices of 2026 as gazetted. The text of the law always wins over our summary of it, and the regulator's live pages win over any snapshot here.

What you will not find here
No rankings. No list of best betting sites, no stars, no scores. The choice of licensee is yours, and a page that steered it would have to explain who paid for the steering.
No bonuses. No welcome offers, no promo codes, no free bet amounts. Section 74 of the Act bars licensees from offers designed to induce people to gamble or to gamble more, and a page that repeats such offers would be doing the inducing for them.
No operator links. Section 87(1) of the Act requires the Authority's approval for gambling advertising on any medium, and regulation 2 of the Gambling Control (Advertising) Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 114) defines an advertisement as any communication promoting participation in gambling. A link that earned this site money would be exactly that. Operator names appear as plain text only, spelled as the regulator lists them.
Where the rules come from
The Gambling Control Act, 2025 (No. 14 of 2025) was assented to on 7 August 2025, published in Kenya Gazette Supplement No. 141 on 12 August 2025 and commenced on 26 August 2025. Section 120 repealed the Betting, Lotteries and Gaming Act (Cap. 131), and section 6(1) created the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Kenya as the regulator, the legal successor of the Betting Control and Licensing Board under section 6(3).
Five sets of Regulations were made under the Act on 29 June 2026 and gazetted on 30 June 2026: Licensing (L.N. 111), Conduct of Gambling Operations (L.N. 112), Foreign-Based Operators (L.N. 113), Advertising (L.N. 114) and the Gambling Appeals Tribunal (L.N. 115). Tax figures come from the Excise Duty Act, the Income Tax Act, the Finance Acts of 2025 and 2026 and KRA notices; payment limits come from Safaricom's and Airtel's own tariff pages. Every guide lists the documents it used, with the date they were read.
Questions people ask first
Is online betting legal in Kenya?
Yes, with a licensed operator. Section 28(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 bars any gambling activity or service that is not licensed under the Act, and section 67(1) creates three online licence types: online bookmaker, online lottery and online casino. Section 36(3) requires an online licensee to display its licence on its platform, so look for it before you register.
How old do I have to be to bet online?
Eighteen. Section 72(2) and (3) of the Act require an operator to see proof of age of majority before registering you and to stop children being registered, and regulation 92(1)(c) of the Gambling Control (Conduct of Gambling Operations) Regulations, 2026 treats anyone under eighteen as a minor who must be kept out of gambling and gambling promotion.
What is the smallest bet I can place online?
Twenty shillings. Section 71(1) of the Act sets KES 20 as the minimum online bet, inclusive of a savings component the Authority may set, and section 71(3) makes it an offence for an operator to accept less, with a fine of not less than KES 3,000,000 and/or up to five years.
How quickly must a betting site pay me?
Section 70(1) of the Act requires monetary online winnings to be credited to your account within two days. The Third Schedule to L.N. 112 of 2026 adds payment tiers: up to KES 500,000 immediately after basic identity checks, KES 500,001 to 5,000,000 within five working days, KES 5,000,001 to 50,000,000 by bank transfer within fourteen working days, and jackpot prizes above that within thirty working days.
Can I stop myself from betting?
Yes. Section 115(1) of the Act lets you enter a self-exclusion agreement with a licensee that covers all gambling, including online. Regulation 70 of L.N. 112 also lets you register with the Authority on Form 1 for six months, one year, two years or indefinitely, and regulation 67(3) requires every online platform to offer a real-time self-exclusion mechanism.
